An Original Play Inspired by the True Story of George Stern

George

The Story

My Lost Bar Mitzvah is an original dramatic comedy by playwright Alicia DesMarteau inspired by the incredible true story of George Stern’s 13th year on the run from the Nazis in Hungary during the Holocaust.

With laughter and warmth, the play weaves together George’s memories with the preparations for his bar mitzvah. By the end, George’s bar mitzvah is no longer lost.

The Why

A great injustice was done to George and the generation that came of age during the Holocaust. But now, we can, in some sense, bring back to life George’s family and the world that was lost. As antisemitism is again on the rise globally, George’s story of overcoming it is more relevant and timely than ever.

The Journey

George dreamed of seeing his story come to life on stage. In 2016, a reading was held at Innovative Arts Studio in Oakville, Ontario. In 2018, a workshop and staged reading was held at Beth Torah Congregation in Toronto, Ontario. These are all steps in the journey to bring George’s story to life.
